The history of the Schemas framework

eyLog supports a wide range of assessment frameworks in England, Scotland and Wales which enables you to focus and plan towards a well-rounded learning and development for the children, including the Schemas framework.

Schemas style developing and learning is a necessary step for children to understand the world around them and to develop their dispositions for future learning, and as such it is important that practitioners and parents understand schema’s and use this framework in their observations and planning, resulting in the teaching and learning becoming more effective.  Unfortunately sometimes Schemas behaviour can be viewed as disruptive and annoying.

Piaget defined a schema as ‘repeatable action sequence, possessing component actions that are tightly interconnected and governed by core meaning’.  Schemas in Early Years is an essential part of brain development, allowing children to explore their ideas and thoughts through repeated patterns of behaviour in play.
